Chinese Panda Coins
Many countries today issue gold bullion coins, which are generally sold at a relatively small premium over their intrinsic gold value. An example is the U.S., which issues American Gold Eagle coins. The Chinese version or equivalent is the highly popular series of Gold Panda coins, commonly referred to as "Pandas".  Pandas were first minted in 1982, and new issues have been produced annually since then. Renowned for their intricate design, charm and spectacular beauty, Gold Panda coins are regarded by many as being among the most aesthetically pleasing coins produced anywhere in the world. They are highly sought out by both collectors, investors and jewelers world-wide. The coins commemorate the rare Giant Panda, the national animal of China and the international symbol for the protection of endangered species.  Panda coins are unique insofar as gold bullion coins are concerned because every year a new reverse appears, always depicting a panda bear, but in a different pose or setting. For example, the 2003 issue features, on the reverse side of the coin, the Giant Panda Bear emerging from a bamboo forest, its natural habitat.   The image on the obverse side of the coin is the famous Temple of Heaven, an ancient architectural masterpiece and a major tourist attraction in China. Chinese characters at the top of the outer circle identify THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, and the date of the coin's issuance is at the bottom.

The China Gold Panda coins are minted from 24K .999 Fine Gold and are issued in five different sizes: 1 Troy Oz. 1/2 Troy Oz. 1/4 Troy Oz. 1/10 Troy Oz. and 1/20 Troy Oz., with legal tender denominations ranging from 20 to 500 Yuan. The highly polished mirror finish with raised frosted elements of the designs gives a proof-like look to the Panda coins.   The yearly mintage limits of Pandas by the Chinese Mint is kept relatively low. This, together with the spectacular beauty of the coins and the fact that there is a new design on the reverse each year, has enhanced their appeal with collectors.
